It’s hard to accurately capture the massive scope of diversity in projects that I’ve completed at Hal Leonard. My duties include video production and photography, but my primary task is to design the covers for Hal Leonard’s unending catalogue of music. So far, during my time at Hal, I’ve designed over 300 book covers, shot and/or edited over 100 videos and have taken countless photos.

This portfolio would be way too large if I shared everything, so this is a small sample of some of my favorite cover designs. I’m always surprised at the assortment of projects that come my way. I’ve had the chance to design covers for artists such as John Williams and Lin-Manuel Miranda and for topics that range from Children’s Songs for Ocarina to Metallica for the Piano!

My first project at Hal: The Lin-Manuel Miranda Collection
The very first project I was assigned at Hal Leonard happened to be Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first complete works collection! Working with a new group of people, learning the ropes of publication, and receiving feedback directly from Miranda and his team was an unforgettable experience. It was also a trip to watch Lin-Manuel promote the book on social media and even on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon!

My favorite project (so far.)
My favorite project at Hal Leonard (so far) is actually one I recently finished. Here Be Dragons is a collection of 8 piano solos composed by the author and inspired by dragons from different cultures around the globe. I also received an “Art Director” credit for this book because I did more than just design the cover. The whole aesthetic of the book - including the interior - was designed by me.

Again, whittling down my portfolio to a few favorites is a tough task, but these covers easily make the shortlist. Not only was the subject matter right up my alley, but I just had a lot of fun making them.
Working within an established series
Over the course of the past 79 years, it’s not surprising that Hal Leonard has produced many well-established and popular series of music books - each with its own set of design parameters, creating recognizable brands for each series. It’s important to make each book look unique, but also feel like it’s part of a bigger collection.
The series that I’ve done the most designs for is the First 50 series. Below is a selection of some of the covers I’ve designed within the First 50 theme.

Similar to designing for Hal Leonard’s own series, sometimes we design for smaller client publishers - each having their own brand and design parameters. One example is Berklee Press of the Berklee College of Music. Here is a sampling of the covers I’ve designed for Berklee.

Occasionally, Hal Leonard will ask me to use my background as a videographer and editor to create anything from promotional videos for new books, to instructional videos that are included with a book, to social media videos showcasing our teams at work. Here are a couple of my favorite examples.
